Further West

  • The beaches at Burgau and Salema (safe for families) are a 15 minute drive away in a westerly direction, whilst the beaches along the West Coast itself provide spectacular conditions for surfing.  These are wilder in character and less busy, but the Atlantic waves can be dangerous, so care must be taken when swimming here.

Horse-Riding

  • Available at Tiffany's; a short drive away.

Sight Seeing

Situated in the extreme south of Portugal, this area was the last to be conquered from the Moors by the Portuguese king in 1292.  Traces of the Moorish presence are still to be seen in its architecture.

Aljezur:  One of the best beaches on the Western Atlantic which lies in a fertile valley.  The town itself is small and tranquil, and is overlooked by a Moorish castle from the 10th century.

Lagos: The nearest town to Praia da Luz enclosed within 5th century walls.  Magnificent churches and museum.  Charming marina and fish market.

Monchique: Up in the hills andsheltered from the coast, this more northerly region is covered with cork and fig trees, orange groves and almond trees.  Thermal spas can be tried in the village of Caldas de Monchique.  Excellent views of the beaches to the south.

Silves: Visit the castle of Arab origin, with its famous water cistern and walls; the Gothic cathedral, which was built on the site of an ancient mosque; the Cross of Portugal (16th century religious sculpture).

Vila do Bispo - Sagres: Five centuries ago Prince Henry the Navigator set up a school of navigation here.  Visit the Hermitage, the Fortress  (originally built in the 14th century) and the 15th century Rosados-Ventos (a 43m diameter compass rose).  Nearby, on the extreme south-western tip is Cabo San Vicente (Cape St. Vincent) - next stop America !
